Ingredients

For the bread and base

  • 1 large loaf large loaf of French or Italian bread The sturdy exterior supports a delicious filling.

For the filling

  • 1/2 lb ground Italian sausage Provides the hearty base.
  • 1/2 cup mini pepperoni slices Adds a fun, bite-sized twist.
  • 1 cup marinara sauce Brings a tangy element.
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese The main cheese that creates gooey texture.
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese Adds sharpness to the flavor.
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder Enhances the overall taste.
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano A classic Italian herb.
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes Optional for heat.
  • 1/2 cup extra mozzarella cheese For an extra cheesy top.

For garnishing

  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped For garnish and freshness.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Cut the top off the loaf of bread and hollow out the center, leaving about 1/2 inch of crust.
  • In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground Italian sausage until browned. Drain excess fat.
  • Stir in onion powder, oregano, and red pepper flakes into the skillet, then add marinara sauce and let simmer.
  • Brush the inside of the hollowed bread with melted butter mixed with garlic powder.
  • Layer half of the mozzarella cheese inside the bread, followed by the sausage mixture, mini pepperoni, and the remaining cheeses.
  • Add extra mozzarella on top and garnish with additional pepperoni slices.

Baking

  • Place the stuffed bread in the oven and bake for 15-18 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.

Serving

  • Sprinkle fresh parsley on top, slice, and serve with extra marinara sauce.

Notes

Consider adding sautéed bell peppers or mushrooms for extra flavor. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Can make ahead, just bake when ready to serve.
