Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • In a large bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In another bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Add the flour mixture alternately with the buttermilk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the flour mixture.
  • Stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth.
  • Fold in 1.5 cups of M&M's.

Baking

  • Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Cool the cakes in the pans for about 10 minutes, then transfer them to wire racks to cool completely.

Decorating

  • Once cooled, frost with your favorite frosting and decorate the top with extra M&M's.

Notes

Allow all ingredients to reach room temperature. For added richness, incorporate melted dark chocolate into the frosting. Experiment with nuts or substitute M&M’s for chocolate chips.
