Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour A staple in every kitchen, this gives the dough its structure.
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder This ingredient gives the Sopapillas their characteristic puffiness.
  • 1 tablespoon sugar A touch of sweetness to balance the flavors.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt To enhance the overall flavor profile.
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil Keeps the dough moist and pliable.
  • 3/4 cup warm water Essential for forming a soft dough.
  • As needed tablespoons vegetable oil (for frying) To achieve that perfect crispy finish.

Toppings

  • As needed tablespoons honey Adds a delightful sweetness.
  • As needed tablespoons powdered sugar For that beautiful finishing touch.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt until well combined.
  • Pour in the vegetable oil and warm water, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough for about 2–3 minutes until it achieves a smooth texture.
  • Cover the dough with a towel and let it rest for 20 minutes.
  • On a floured surface, roll the dough into a rectangle about 1/4-inch thick. Cut the dough into 3-inch squares or triangles, depending on your preference.
  • In a deep skillet or pot, heat vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C).

Cooking

  • Carefully drop a few pieces of dough into the hot oil. Fry until golden and puffed, about 1 minute per side.
  • Drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  • While they are still warm, dust with powdered sugar and drizzle with honey. Serve immediately.

Notes

To elevate your Sopapillas, consider adding a tablespoon of melted butter to the dough. A pinch of cinnamon can add warmth to the flavor. For filling options, try chocolate or fruit preserves before drizzling with honey.
