  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk Room temperature

  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1 batch cream cheese frosting For topping

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake pan with liners.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, baking soda, cocoa powder, and salt. Whisk until well incorporated.
  • In another bowl, mix the vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and white vinegar until smoothly blended.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined.
  • Fill the cupcake liners about two-thirds full with the batter.

Baking

  • Bake for 20-22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Let the cupcakes cool completely on a wire rack before frosting.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature ingredients. Don't skip the vinegar as it helps create a tender cake crumb.
